UK Calling
The biggest change to telephone numbers in over a decade happened on 1st July 2015! It’s called UK Calling and means clear call rates for everyone when ringing service numbers, which are those that start with the digits 084, 087, 09 and 118.
There are two strands to UK Calling:
Ofcom, as part of its UK Calling campaign, set-up the website ukcalling.info which explained the changes to consumers and told organisations what they needed to know and what they needed to do. This website ran for nine months either side of the July 2015 implementation date. The salient points are now detailed on two pages within Ofcom's website - one page for consumers, the other for providers.

- Clear call rates for calling 084, 087, 09 and 118 service numbers | No longer is the rate applicable to only BT lines quoted. UK Calling sees a rate applicable to all given and which makes overt the Service Charge set by and to the benefit of the number user.
- Free calls to 0800 and 0808 freephone numbers from mobiles, as well as landlines | Previously mobile operators generally charged for these types of call. As part of UK Calling, they are now free to call from mobile phones as well as from fixed lines.
