Nuisance calls

People in the UK are plagued by unsolicited nuisance phone calls from various organisations. This is despite various regulations and statutory powers that are in place to prevent them. Additionally, numerous minor tweaks to this failed regulatory regime have failed to stem the tide.

We are calling for individual sector regulators in the known problem areas to implement a ban on the use of the telephone for marketing purposes. In comparison to general regulators such as ICO, individual sector regulators have a much closer relationship with the organisations they regulate and much more power over them.

While penalties issued by ICO are prevented from causing financial damage to an errant company, individual sector regulators have the power to suspend or remove their licences to operate. In some cases, they can suspend licences while they investigate breaches of regulations, not wait until any such breach has been proven.
